Here is the message from our dear friend Mohammed, who is like family to us here in Portland, Oregon. Please know that every donation will go directly to helping Mohammed and his family:

I am Mohammed from Palestine. I am 24 years old, and I am writing to you now from the besieged Gaza Strip. As you all know, we have been living under daily and nightly bombings every day since October 2023, and my family and I, like all the people of Gaza, have been living in intense suffering during this time. I just want to share with all of you a bit about myself, and my life before and during the war.

Before this war, we were living a beautiful life in our home filled with family love and warmth. I lived in our family home with my parents and siblings. In front of our house, there was a small courtyard with some roses, some grass, two guava trees and two lemon trees.

Our home was in East Khan Younis, an area that was targeted by the Israeli military for destruction. Our beautiful family home, with our garden and lovely rooms and furniture, was destroyed by an Israeli missile.

I have beautiful memories of our home, but this war came and stole this reality from us. Our home is gone, and we were deprived of all the sweet, lovely family moments we used to have. And I lost all these beautiful things that were comforting for me.

I am a person who loves the winter, and the quiet sound of rain, which I used to sit and listen to, especially just sitting on the veranda on a quiet evening. I love the flowers, and the cool calm after the rain when the air is still wet and the plants drip with the fresh water, and sometimes I even see rainbows here. Now all of that is lost – I have not had a moment of peace since this latest escalation began in October 2023, and the sounds of drones and bombings are constant.

When our home was destroyed, I fled along with my parents, my siblings, and nieces and nephews to a tent camp. From there, we have been displaced five times, each time fleeing for our lives under the Israeli bombardment. My sister’s husband, my brother-in-law, was captured by Israeli soldiers and we have no idea where he was taken or what conditions he is being held in.

The first place where we were displaced was to a tent camp called Al-Qarara, north of Khan Yunis, then the second place was Khan Younis Al-Balad, then the third displacement was west of Khan Yunis, specifically to the UNRWA schools and Nasser Hospital, after that the fourth displacement was to the Al-Shakokish area, specifically the Rafah side, then the fifth displacement was to the Khan Younis side.

In the midst of all this, my brother and his wife had a baby, named Ziad, who is thankfully healthy and alive, and is a source of joy for all of us as we live through this terrifying time.

Currently, we have returned to live in my grandfather’s house in Khan Younis because our house is gone and we cannot even go to our land where the rubble of our home is, because the Israeli military has blocked access to the area. It is very crowded to have all of us together, but there is no choice, nowhere to go that is safe.

I am writing to you now with a sad and broken heart about what has happened to us. We are living in very difficult conditions, in circumstances that we never expected to live in.

The cost of basic necessities is extremely high in Gaza right now. For example, the cost of three potatoes is currently $40 USD!! Before this Israeli assault on Gaza began, the cost of three potatoes was $0.55 USD.

Our hope is to stay in Gaza, to rebuild our home. I hope that everyone who sees this message will stand by me. I will do everything I can to help my family. The Israeli occupation has destroyed all our dreams, our lives, and our hopes in this war. We just want to live our lives in peace, but unfortunately everything is gone. I hope that you will stand by me and support me and my family in this difficult time.

Here are the people your donation will be supporting: My father, Ziad, age 58 My mother, Rawda, age 56

My sister Janan, 14 years old

My brother, Tariq, 29 His wife, Farah, 20

My brother’s baby who was just born during this war: Ziad

My sister, Reham, 32 years old Her children: Malek, 12 years old Malak, 9 years old Salma, 7 years old Sama, 2 years old

My biggest hope is that this war ends and we can restore part of our old life that was destroyed by the Israeli bombing, to be able to rebuild our home and reunite our family.

And I hope that everyone who sees these words can please do what you can to support me to help my family in light of these difficult circumstances.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
